Biography: From a young age, Whitney was fascinated at the vastness of even just the observable universe. Born into a family that was a far reach from poor, his opportunities were anything but limited. His parents were enthralled by his interest with space craft as a child. For his fifth birthday, they bought for him a model space ship kit. A few hours later, it had been assembled and placed lovingly on his book shelf. As he and his love for space, science, and flight grew, so too withered his appreciation for the people around him. His parents' appreciation for each other had also waned. Tired of the monotony that accompanied married life, Richard Morse, Whitney's father, divorced the child's mother when Whitney was 14. While he had done his best to stay in touch with his son, tensions with his own ex-wife made this difficult. By the time Whitney was 20, his father had a new wife as well as a daughter. The only contact they had had was Whitney asking his father for the credits to send him to piloting school on Caroth, as his mother had been left with little money after the divorce. Richard could not be called particularly selfish. He contacted his son and agreed to give him the money, provided he consented to meeting his step mother and sister.
It was quickly agreed upon. Richard, his wife and daughter, Mariana and Marie respectively, all piled onto a frigate destined for Caroth, where they would meet Whitney and his mother, whom themselves would be arriving on a separate ship. The families met and got along well enough. Richard sent the money to the piloting academy Whitney had been accepted to, much to Whitney's excitement. His father bought his ex-wife a ticket for the ride back to Lirra on the same ship as his new family - an effort to rekindle their lost friendship. After Whitney kissed his mother goodbye, hugged away his father and nodded to the others, he dashed off to the apartment his father had set him up in.
Before his life could get better, it had to first get much worse. No sooner than two months into his career as a pilot in training did he receive news of an accident that had killed all of his family. The cruise ship they had taken back to Lirra had collided with an asteroid, effectively killing everyone on board. Whitney was saddened by the loss of his family, but the impact it made on him was hardly significant in comparison to its impact on his passion for space travel. He had never realized space craft, the very thing he had loved so much, even more than his family, had killed people. Hundreds of innocent people. It hadn't even been a battleship, just a frigate carrying civilians. Soon after he found he had developed a serious aversion, bordering on phobia, of space craft. Unable to attend his classes with breaking down into fits of hysteria, he withdrew his enrollment in the school and blew his inheritance on sending himself off to a well known school specializing in engineering.
After graduating at 27, Whitney found himself soon out of a home when the end of the month came round and he had no money left to pay. To terrified of space travel to return to his home on Lirra, he found himself stranded on Caroth as nothing more than a well educated bum.
